Making a Drawing - The Painting!

This is a cleverly titled part two of a previous post. There I discussed the ins and outs of making a drawing and inking it with pens. I also wondered why this generic looking man had the expression that he does. Who knows? But I figured he could use some color, the camera was still set up and so I went for it. The painting is very simple and was done in just a few minutes.

Making a Drawing

This is how I generally go about making a drawing. I did this as a demo piece for my students so they could see the steps from initial drawing to inking. The face is of no one in particular, it's just a generic man. He looks nonplussed about something or another. I wonder what he has to be so miserable about? Early on in the drawing he looked more alert, hopeful somehow. But it all seemed a sham; this dude is not having any of it. He hasn't even shaved in who knows how long?! How can you expect him to get all excited about your inane news?! Cut the guy some slack, mind your own beeswax and enjoy the short video.

Sheesh!

So this is what happens when you don't really listen to your art director all that closely. He says that he needs a simple line drawing of a Chinese dragon. I hear "Chinese dragon, line drawing". It's hard to hold back on something like this. But I thought I was holding back - it's just lines, right? But he said that it was great and would look good in one of my drawing books, but that it isn't what he needed. So I had to do it again. I made a time lapse of the smaller drawing that he actually wanted (below). By the way, go ahead and print out the big dragon as a coloring page - it'll be fun.

Here's a better look at the watercolor that I did in the time lapse that I posted yesterday.

This, by the way, is in a "new" drawing book (that I started 6 months ago).

Here are a couple of time lapse videos I made with a very cool free app for my iPhone - iMotion HD. One I did for a very simple illustration project and the other is a page in one of my drawing books. I wanted to show how I go about painting one of my drawings. Incidentally, the little boy with the sword is a copy of a Frank Miller drawing for Lone Wolf and Cub.
